Principle #1-HONESTY_Step 1-We admitted we were powerless over alcohol, that our lives had become unmanageable...

We learned that we had to fully concede
to our innermost selves that we were alcoholics. This is the first step in
recovery. The delusion that we are like other people, or presently may be,
has to be smashed.

Principle #2-HOPE_Step 2-Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity...

Lack of power, that was our dilemma. we had to
find a power by which we could live, and it had to be a Power greater than
ourselves. Obviously. But where and how were we to find this Power?
Well, that's exactly what this book is about. Its main object
is to enable you to find a Power greater than yourself which will solve your
problem.

Principle #3-FAITH_Step 3-Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him...

Being convinced, we were at Step Three, which is that we decided to turn our will and our life over to God as we understood Him. Just what do we mean by that, and just what do we do?

Third Step Prayer...

God, I offer myself to Thee -- to build with me and to do with me as Thou
wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take
away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would
help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy will always!

Principle #4-COURAGE_Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves...

This was Step Four. A business which takes no regular inventory usually goes broke. Taking commercial inventory is a fact-finding and a fact-facing process.

Principle #5-INTEGRITY_Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs...

Having made our personal inventory, what shall we do about it? We have been trying to get a new attitude, a new relationship with our Creator, and to discover the obstacles in our path. We have admitted certain defects; we have ascertained in a rough way what the trouble is; we have put our finger on the weak times in our personal inventory. Now these are about to be cast out. This requires action on our part, which, when completed, will mean that we have admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being, the exact nature of our defects.

Principle #6-WILLINGNESS_Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character...

We thank God from the bottom of our heart that we know Him better. Taking this book down from our shelf we turn to the page which contains the twelve steps. Carefully reading the first five proposals we ask if we have omitted anything, for we are building an arch through which we shall walk a free man at last. Is our work solid so far? Are the stones properly in place? Have we skimped on the cement put into the foundation? Have we tried to make mortar without sand?

Principle #7-HUMILITY_Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings...

My Creator, I am now willing that you should have all of me, good and bad. I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows. Grant me strength, as I go out from here, to do your bidding. Amen.

Principle #8-BROTHERLY LOVE_Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all...

Now we need more action, without which we find that "Faith without works is dead." Let's look at Steps Eight and Nine. We have a list of all persons we have harmed and to whom we are willing to make amends. We made it when we took inventory.

Principle #9-JUSTICE_Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others...

Probably there are still some misgivings. As we look over the list of business acquaintances and friends we have hurt, we may feel diffident about going to some of them on a spiritual basis. Let us be reassured. To some people we need not, and probably should not emphasize the spiritual feature on our first approach.

The 12 Step Promises...

If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.

Principle #10-PERSEVERANCE_Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it...

Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them. This thought brings us to Step Ten

Principle #11-SPIRITUAL_Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out...

Step Eleven suggests prayer and meditation. We shouldn't be shy on this matter of prayer. Better men Into Action than we are using it constantly. It works, if we have the proper attitude and work at it. It would be easy to be vague about this matter. Yet, we believe we can make some definite and valuable suggestions.

Principle #12-SERVICE_Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs...

Practical experience shows that nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics. It works when other activities fail. This is our twelfth suggestion: Carry this message to other alcoholics! You can help when no one else can. You can secure their confidence when other fail. Remember they are very ill.

A Vision For You...

Our book is meant to be suggestive only. We realize we know only a little. God will constantly disclose more to you and to us. Ask Him in your morning meditation what you can do each day for the man who is still sick. The answers will come, if your own house is in order.

An inventory that shows how the 12 Steps relate to the 12 Principles...

If the 4thStep inventory is too frightening then this method will work - First at the very top of your inventory page write these words (I am afraid to write this inventory) and then do one (1) resentment a day or one (1) a week, but write out all 12 steps for your one resentment. There is a written inventory example on one resentment at the enclosed address. All 12 steps were applied. Also included is the relevant Principle. Go to this address...
